Alghero, the most visited and popular resort in Sardinia famous for its coral fishing and Catalan past in northwestern Sardinia. In the Coral Museum (Museo del Corallo) you can see beautiful corals.

The city was founded in 1102 by the Doria family of Genoa in this form of fortress that is still present. In 1353, the Aragonians (northern Spanish community) overcome the Genoa fleet at the foot of Capo Caccia.

After a long siege, the townspeople are deployed to the Balearic Islands and then rebuild the city with the inhabitants of Northeastern Spain. This is where the Catalan dialect and the Spanish effect of Alghero come from.

With its Mediterranean, narrow streets, palm-lined marina and endless sandy beaches, it is undoubtedly one of Sardinia’s most beautiful cities. Thanks to a year-round pleasant climate, palms are present throughout the city.

The most famous church in the city is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, which began to be built in the 1530s and is approx. It takes 200 years to build. The Gothic Catalan style is borne by the gate of anger tower and the octagonal bell tower, which, according to some, is the most beautiful bell tower in Sardinia.

25 km from Alghero, Capo Caccia a steep limestone rock, less known for coral fishing, rather than the striking blue sea and the fantastic panorama, but most of all Grotte di Nettuno. There are several underwater cave systems in its area, as well as the Grotta di Nettuno, a million-year-old stalactite cave.
