Heraklion is the largest city and resort in Crete, with a diverse history that it has been ruled by the Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman Empires over the centuries. Its architecture also shows the diversity of the centuries: the city has many sculptures that shape significant figures in the history of the island, such as the sculptures of El Greco and Nikos Kazantzakis. Many fountains have survived from the Venetian era, including the Bembo, Priuli, Palmeti, Sagredo, and Morosini fountains.

There are many museums in the city. For those who love history, the Archaeological Museum can provide a real experience, where we can see legacies from the Bronze Age to Roman times. The Museum of History, the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of History and Traditions of Crete can also be interesting. In the latter we can also admire the painting of El Greco.

Hersonissos (meaning “peninsula”) is a resort town in northern Crete, on the border of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. The town lies about 25 km east of Heraklion and west of Agios Nikolaos. What is usually called Hersonissos is actually part of the peninsula and port of Heraklion, a regional unit of Heraklion. It is 25 km from the airport of Iraklion and 27 km from the port of Heraklion.

Hersonissos is a Cretan resort area which is also home to the island’s only golf club. Tourist sites include the Hersonissos Aquarium, the Labyrinth Amusement Park and the Dinosaur Park of Gournes, among others. Hersonissos has several beaches. These include Potamos Karteros, Tobruk, Arina, Vathianos Kampos, Kokkini Hani, Gournes, Gouves, Apolselemis, Analipsi, Anissara, Sarantaris, Hersonissos, Stalida, Klotsani, Malia and Potamos. As you can see, the area around Hersonissos is full of beaches and bathing areas, so it is definitely worth taking the time to visit all of them during your holiday.

The area around Hersonissos is famous for its prehistoric archaeological finds. On the coast, about one kilometre east of Hersonissos, was an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Britomartis. The ancient city of Chersonasos was important enough early on in the Roman province of Creta et Cyrenaica to become a Christian bishopric, the centre of the seat of the metropolitanate of Gortyna. In the area you will discover many landmarks, places, monuments and historical treasures.
