The area around Hersonissos is famous for its prehistoric archaeological finds. On the coast, about one kilometre east of Hersonissos, was an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Britomartis. The ancient city of Chersonasos was important enough early on in the Roman province of Creta et Cyrenaica to become a Christian bishopric, the centre of the seat of the metropolitanate of Gortyna.
