Lisbon’s wealth of tourism, gastronomy, arts and entertainment make it a destination recognised worldwide.

Its rich history, abundant architectural heritage, outstanding local cuisine and many attractions make it a unique destination. St George’s Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) and Rossio Square make a great starting point for sightseeing, where you can stop at a café and try the famous pastel de nata (sponge cake). Spend a morning shopping at the stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira market and, as an excellent programme option, see the fascinating marine world at the Lisbon Oceanarium, one of Europe’s largest aquariums. Other highlights include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of St Jerome’s Monastery, an outstanding work of Portuguese Manueline architecture, St George’s Castle, Santa Justa lift.

Portugal has a Mediterranean climate, which means that the coldest weather in winter is only around 15 degrees Celsius so you can enjoy the beach almost all year round, and Lisbon’s beaches are famous for their clean beaches, making it the perfect place to combine sightseeing with a beach holiday and relax and sunbathe.

The Palace of Mafra (Portuguese: Palácio de Mafra) is a monumental Baroque and neoclassical palace and monastery located in Mafra, Portugal, 28 kilometres from the capital Lisbon. Construction began in 1717 and was completed in 1755.

In July 2019, the Mafra Royal Complex, which includes the palace, the cathedral, the monastery and the library, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The complex boasts imposing dimensions, with a 220-metre-long façade and is located opposite the city of Mafra, with two towers on either side. The royal residence is on the second floor. The cathedral is part of the palace and is in Baroque and Neoclassical style. Here you can also find sculptures by many famous Italian artists. The second floor of the palace houses the rococo library, which is truly one of the jewels of the palace. The monastery is also an important part of the complex.
